Example of Improved Compliance

Smoke barrier breaches result in compromised compartments.

Building compartmentation using smoke barriers and related features protects patients, staff and visitors' lives from smoke and related toxic gases.

Patients are protected from harmful products created in a fire condition.

Most fire deaths are not caused by burns, but by smoke inhalation. As the person inhales smoke their ability for self-rescue is diminished to the point where they cannot escape to an exit.

Ensure smoke barriers are intact and provide compartmentation and resist the movement of smoke.

Smoke barriers must be maintained around patient care areas to allow emergency response to extinguish the fire or relocate the patients to a safe compartment within the hospital, such as an adjacent smoke compartment.

Harm to the patients, staff, and visitors.

If the building is not properly maintained, smoke can migrate during a fire. Uncontrolled smoke movement that i snot restricted by properly maintained buildings can harm patients, staff, and visitors.
